The world has changed significantly recently where we are all spending much more time indoors. As a Mudder Nation we need to stick together and look after each other which includes looking after our diet. One of the best ways to stay healthy is to make sure we are eating the right mix of nutritious foods that are high in protein and fiber, and low in saturated fats to help boost our immune system and continue to maintain our normal healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep some structure in your diet and keep you on track to staying fit and healthy, ready to get in the mud and over those obstacles as soon as we are able – Tougher Together.
Set those watches, routine is important
Snacking becomes so much easier when the fridge is only a few steps away from the couch. It’s important to stick to set meal times as much as possible, write them down and put them in a prominent place so everyone in your household can see them. When you go to the supermarket avoid buying junk food to snack on, try things like nuts or dried fruit for healthy eating. If you’re feeling like a challenge use your extra time and have a go at making protein balls or granola bars. Make sure your routine also includes regular exercise, make a plan for training you want to do and stick to it. This can be as simple as going for a walk or a simple home workout.
Meal Prep, but don’t hoard
Staying at home as much as possible during lockdown is important so stocking up on staples is practical but there is no need to hoard as essential supermarkets will be remaining open. Make sure you are checking your pantry and freezer before going to the supermarket to see what you already have and go with a list. Plan what you want to make, buying ingredients that you can use across breakfast, lunch and dinner to minimise food waste. When buying staples, look to items that have extra nutritional value eg whole grain pasta, legumes or oily fish.
Mix it up
It’s time to get those creative juices flowing. What better time to mix up the regular meals you eat with new ingredients and recipes. The internet is a wealth of information when it comes to recipes so do some research and see what you can find. With supermarkets lacking in some products, find alternatives to what you would normally buy. Swap chicken for other foods on the high protein list like white fish or lean beef, or even consider going vegetarian for a few weeks. With the kids being at home it’s also a great time for them to get in the kitchen too. Use cooking as an activity the whole family can do together and have some fun in the kitchen with healthy eating.
Hell Yes H20
As Mudders we know how important water is when we exercise but we also need to be remembering to drink lots of it when we are at home. Staying hydrated is crucial to maintaining body functions and regulating temperature. If drinking water is not part of your normal routine, try buying a new drink bottle and keep it filled and with you. You can also try adding extra flavours to your water by adding slices of lemon or orange, cucumber or mint.
